Simulation of the joining process of a Flow Drill screw connection (FDS) in automotive engineering

Modern lightweight construction in the automotive sector requires the use of different materials such as aluminum, ultra-high-strength steels and composite materials. This multi-material mix also uses novel joining techniques such as FDS. Since the quality of these connections depends strongly on the right choice of process parameters and large test areas are very time-consuming and cost-intensive, the simulation-based optimization of the process parameters plays a major role.

Your duties and responsibilities:

  • Literature research and state-of-the-art analysis of existing FE codes to simulate a flow-hole-forming screwing of aluminum sheets
  • Construction of simple simulation models and thermomechanical simulation of the joining process for different process parameters
  • Validation of simulation results based on micrographs from existing experiments
  • Summary of the results and derivation of possible future research areas
