Modeling the failure of welds in the crash simulation

Department: Integrated Vehicle Development

Diploma Thesis

Ref.Nr. DAX_012

The requirements for efficiency and minimization of CO2 emissions as well as the growing comfort and safety requirements pose technical challenges for the automotive industry. In order to get closer to the goal of a prototype-free development, an integrated prediction of the deformation and failure behavior of the component and connection technology is of enormous importance. In particular, the use of modern high-strength lightweight materials and – associated – new joining techniques occur under stress conditions high stress concentrations in the component structure, which can lead to the formation of cracks in the surrounding structure in addition to the failure of the component. These cracks can in many cases lead to a spontaneous breakage of the component and are very critical from the point of view of passive safety. To prevent this failure of the component in a crash by design measures, the forecasting tools must be able to properly describe the failure of the fasteners and crack initiation and crack propagation.

Your duties and responsibilities:

  • Development of a simple finite element realization of a weld for use in full vehicle crash simulations
  • Development of a model to predict the failure behavior of a weld under crash loading
  • Execution of finite element simulations to validate the developed models based on existing experimental data

What we expect from you:

  • Study Mechanical Engineering, Technical Physics, Technical Mathematics or similar
  • Interest in FEM simulation and FEM fundamentals
  • Commitment, willingness to learn, flexibility

What we offer:

  • Professional support in the processing of future-relevant topics
  • Collaboration in a dedicated, dynamic team
  • Paid diploma / master thesis

start: immediately (duration: 6-8 months)
